Tropical Storm Alberto is huffing and puffing his way toward North Carolina but promises to be much less dangerous than most of his predecessors last year.

Rain, thunderstorms and a few gusts of wind Tuesday night and today are about all weather forecasters are predicting for Kinston, although some low-lying areas might see minor flooding.

Alberto was moving toward the North Carolina coast at 14 mph Tuesday evening, and his speed was expected to increase. He was scheduled to arrive in South Carolina early today, accompanied by a few tornadoes, and continue on toward North Carolina. Forecasters believed the storm would be downgraded to a tropical depression before arriving here.

Kinston can expect to see rainfall accumulations of 4 to 6 inches today, the National Hurricane Center said, with up to 8 inches of rain falling in a few areas.

Three-day cone of probability
