Kinston once again will celebrate July 4 with a naturalization ceremony for new citizens.
U.S. Eastern District Judge W. Earl Britt has agreed to hold the ceremony at Harmony Hall, said Adrian King, who is slated to be next year’s president of the Lenoir County Historical Association. The association sponsored last year’s event, which King organized. It was first time naturalization ceremonies had been held in Kinston.
Last year’s ceremony was at 2 p.m. on the Harmony Hall lawn in sweltering temperatures. King said this year’s swearing-in will be moved to 10 a.m. to avoid the hottest time of the day.
Twenty-nine people from countries such as India, China, Sweden, Japan, Mexico and the Philippines became naturalized Americans last year. The historical association held a reception after the Oath of Allegiance was given, and arranged for the guests to tour the city’s historical attractions and celebrate a traditional Fourth of July, complete with fireworks, at Grainger Stadium that evening.
Details of this year’s event have not been finalized, King said, but he is attempting to arrange a flyover by jets from Seymour Johnson Air Base in Goldsboro.
The ceremony is open for all residents to attend. |
