The Father Holds The Boy While The Mother Applies The Cowhide In The Presence Of The Son’s Rowdy Associates A Bar In Paddy’s Hollow The Scene Of The Incident A Policeman’s Assistance Obtained There was an unusual and withal exciting occurrence in a Paddy’s Hollow early last night.

It seems that the 19-year old son of a certain well-to-do mechanic of this city has become very unmanageable and spends much of his time in that disreputable locality. His parents determined upon the most harsh measures as a possible remedy for his waywardness, and early last night, both the father and mother "raided" Paddy’s Hollow in quest of their son The father carried a three foot cowhide.

When they entered the barroom in question and discovered the son in the midst of a crowd of rowdy companions, the father laid hold upon the boy and held him while the mother applied the cowhide with right good will and telling effect, which was forcibly evidenced by the wild yells and pleas for mercy on the part of the unruly boy. The mother did not cease from applying the cowhide until she had worn it down to a short and unwieldy stump. The boy positively refused to accompany his parents home, and Policeman Steed, who was on duty on that beat, was called to their assistance with a view to carrying him by force.

When they had succeeded in carrying him in this manner as far as Front Street, the boy told them that if they would turn him loose and allow him, as he expressed it, "to walk along the streets as a boy should," he would make no further resistance and go quietly home with them

They released him, and he walked quietly with them for a few paces and then suddenly dashed off down Front Street in the opposite direction from home. The irate father and Policeman Steed followed in hot pursuit, but the boy out ran them and made good his escape.
