The Divided
Skirt
Look For It In The Ladies'
Department
Kinston Journal
December 15, 1881
Viscountess Haberton is the inventor of the divided skirt, or
semi-trousers, for women, her idea being to consult the convenience of women in
their attire. As she says herself, the best means of doing this is to make
dress subservient to the laws of physiology. Women have two limbs, but by tying
both together in the senseless fashion of the day they practically reduce the
number to one. They leave themselves two feet to shuffle about with, but do
their best to disable these with high heels, pointed toes and that dreadful
invention, patent leather. It is quite certain that a revolution in dress of
some kind is fast approaching.
